Making the Chain Strong: Julian Smith

Our very own Son of Excellence, Julian Smith, recited a poem he wrote at our community meeting this past week. He spoke articulately and represented his house well. Read his poem below.

The Way We Live
By Julian Smith

We live a life that is not fair.
Which makes us a little scared.
So we prepare
Ready to share
Our stories with one another
Father to mother
Sister to brother
Then we have to cover
The secrets and stories of others

We have situations
That have operations
That take preparation
And it is hard to face them
We have problems
And sometimes we can't solve them
So we go to our husbands and wives
To tell the stories of our lives.

Making the Chain Strong: Ms. Fields

Ms. Fields is our Art Teacher at Tindley Prep. She is adamant about making sure scholars are excellent in all facets of education. Her emphasis on writing, detail, and understanding of the physical world through art is amazing. Here is her explanation of her class in her own words: "Through the four domains of Art, Art Production, Aesthetics, Art Criticism, and Art History, Tindley Prep scholars will develop their creative thought process. Students will become creative thinkers who are constantly pushing themselves to construct new ideas. Scholars will be encouraged to recognize art in the many forms around them thus, allowing them to look at their world in a brand new way. Scholars will be taught and encouraged to enjoy the act of creating art. There is a satisfaction that accompanies visual self-expression and it must be experienced to be fully realized."

Servant Leadership: Toys for Tots

The Sons of Excellence had a very clear goal for the
children of Indianapolis this year. They wanted to raise 200 toys for children who needed them the most. Several of the young men brought in toys by the bucket loads. Many young men, like Mr. Keshon Polk, used his own hard-earned money to purchase toys.

We believe one of the best forms of leadership is servant leadership. Our young men have proven that they are ready to be leaders in our community by donating 223 toys to the children of our great city. Prep exceeded their goal by 23 toys and we hope the children who receive them are overjoyed with their gifts.

Thank you for your service young men.
