Spotlight: Prep's PTO

The Tindley Prep PTO is nothing short of amazing. It, like the school it supports, is a second year organization. However, age does not completely explain what this group is doing in our school.

A short rundown of their great accomplishments include: Tindley Block Party and end of year bash, dinner at Parent University, hallway patrols at the end of the day, working our concession stand for basketball games, donating an air hockey table, donating a table tennis set, creating certificates and programs for assemblies, and spearheading the yearbook project.

They are the most dynamic parent group with which I have ever worked and I look forward to all of the things they will continue to do.

Semester House Winner: Harvard House

Congratulations to the young men of the Harvard House for being in the lead at the end if the semester in the House Challenge. They earned an end of semester fun day which included open gym, air hockey, arcade basketball, and tons of good fun.

Harvard took the lead by blasting the competition in a culture challenge and stock market challenge. The young men of Harvard were joined by the 6th grade who were celebrating their Acuity scores.

The 6th grade beat our sister school on average in reading and mathematics this for this assessment and are poised to make great strides in preparing for college.

Spotlight: Prep Basketball Champs

Prep's 8th grade A team just became the best in Indianapolis. They beat John Marshall 82-43. Congratulations to these young men for becoming 8th grade city champs and meeting high academic expectations to even step on the court.

Make the Chain Strong!

Tindley Prep's First Year Grade

Tindley Prep has joined Tindley Accelerated in becoming an "A" school. As a first year school our students, teachers, and parents did amazing things by becoming the best school in the state if Indiana for young men. In our second year, we will continue on our journey of becoming the best school in general.

Congratulations to the entire Tindley Prep school community on becoming an "A" school!

Welcome Back 2013-2014

Prep Families

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. I look forward to the magnificent things we will be able to accomplish this year. We did great things for young men last year, but we cannot rest on our laurels. We must work harder and smarter to achieve the goal of college for every one of our young men.

I am happy to announce that we will continue many successful co-curricular activities this year along with new clubs for students to enjoy. Mr. Shah will be bringing back the Tiger Cafe. Mr. Bork will be returning for Chess Club. In addition to those things, we will also have GAME IT build a video game curriculum, First Lego League, and Hip-Hop Club will continue.

The Tindley Preparatory Academy would like to thank you all for choosing our family as a school home for your son. He is a son of excellence and there will be none greater.

Preparation: Summer Work for Prerequisite Preparation

Hello Prep Families

In an effort to make sure students do not lose valuable skills over the summer, we have uploaded work that will help students stay sharp on a basic level over the summer. As you know, we give diagnostic and prerequisite tests at the beginning of the year. It is our hope that this work will help your student stay ready for those.

There aren't many problems included (20 items per grade level for math - 1 packet for English), but we think these are the most essential foundational skills for your young men.

See the links below for what you need for your young men.

Tiger Cafe: Urban Acres

On Wednesday, May 29, the scholars of the Tindley Prep Tiger Café took a field trip to Indy Urban Acres, a partnership between Gleaner’s Food Bank and the Indianapolis Parks and Recreation Department. Indy Urban Acres is an eight-acre urban farm and community garden on the east side of Indianapolis. All of the produce cultivated on the land is donated to local food banks and nutrition programs, and members of the neighborhood can grow crops of their own in community plots.

Students learned about growing plants, composting, beekeeping, raised beds, egglaying hens, and a variety of other facts about where their food comes from. Many were so surprised to see what their food looked like when it was growing out of the ground! They got to sample some fresh spinach and other vegetables growing on the farm. Each scholar then got to plant some bean sprouts in soil, which they could take home to start gardens of their own.

See pictures in the link below.

Chiefs Give Back: Financial Literacy

Tindley Prep 8th graders receiving their certificates
Three of the leaders in our school (Chief Z. Brown, Chief T. Mitchell, and Chief W. Malone) created a non-profit organization to teach young people financial responsibility at Tindley Prep. They introduced young people to bank officials and banking ideals to help them become financially responsible immediately. The program even had young men create bank accounts and issued principal funds to help young men start their journey of financial literacy.

Tindley Prep is extremely proud of these young men for their service to our community. We also look forward to seeing them bring the program back to our 8th graders next year.

See more pictures of their final meeting after the jump.

Chiefs and a Doctor with Governor Pence

Chief Malone, Chief Brown, Chief Mitchell, and Doctor Scott had an opportunity to witness the signing of the school safety bill created by a team headed by Pence.

The school safety bill was created as a response to the tragedies that have been taking place in schools across the country. Governor Pence believes that this bill will serve as an opportunity to provide schools with the resources needed to provide safety services.

Principal Jones noted in a conversation with Scott Elliott (Indianapolis Star) that EdPower schools have benefitted from these types of services by having William Benjamin serve as Chief of School Security.

Testimonial from Cooking Club

A Parent Testimony:

J’Kai, probably like most boys his age, often really struggles to complete tasks independently. He needs many redirections and a lot of support to finish a complex task independently. In the past, when he’s tried to cook independently it has been a disaster. Since cooking club started, he’s been talking about it non-stop. I decided that we should give him a spotlight to showcase his new recipes when we went to a friend’s house for dinner recently. I had no idea what the recipe involved. J’Kai and I went to the grocery store, and from memory, he purchased all of the ingredients. Later that day he actually remembered that he was in charge of making the appetizer and asked if it was OK to start. I had mentally prepared to have to help him through this with a large amount of patience. However, I was in the middle of something and told him he could get started, planning to join him shortly to give him support. I checked in a few minutes later and he reported that he was doing fine, and then a little while later I started to smell something. When I asked what he was doing he said he was in the final stages of making his appetizer. When I went downstairs, my son had not only chopped all of the vegetables, but had them in the pan cooking, and was cleaning up his mess! Miracle of all miracles! He recreated the recipe completely independently after watching the recipe be cooked only once in cooking club and it was delicious! I’ve never seen him do anything like this before!

Spotlight: Chief Malone and EdPower Robotics

Chief William Malone: Driver for the Robotics Team
As many of you may know, Arlington High School is currently operated by our parent company EdPower. What you may not know is that EdPower has a robotics team based out of Arlington. The team is advised by Mr. Marlon Lllewelyn and Mr. Soso DeDe. They recently participated in their first competition at Purdue and created a rookie legend. Our own Chief William Malone was the driver for the robotics team.

Please read Mr. DeDe's recollection of day 3 of their experience below:

Day 3 (7am -6pm)

On Day 3 the second day of qualifications for the playoffs and the playoffs that evening, we would suffer some losses but even in those losses our “legend” continued. In one legendary match, we were partnered with team 829 our mentor team. They had blown a transmission and we had to help knock them onto the pyramid as they couldn't drive. In the process taking damage to our robot but working together to win. In another match our final match before the playoffs we faced the Mighty Hawaiian team again and we were determined to win. Mr. L wanted to play it safe and score our 10 points and get into the playoffs but our driver team said no and told me they wanted to play to win and defeat Hawaii. I had to disregard Mr. L’s instructions and yells to get on the pyramid – which I pretended to not hear and go with the kids as I too wanted to defeat Hawaii.  Hawaii had been scoring over 100 points shooting the Frisbee alone in each match. In this epic match up we went toe to toe with the Hawaiian alliance “initially” winning 34 to 31 at the end of regulation. It was in this match up that we solidified our status no matter how the competition went. We held Mighty Hawaii to 31 points and we nearly won. At the end of the match each robot has to climb a pyramid to get points. We were ready to climb which would have earned our team 10 points. This would have made our score 43, but we knew that the Hawaiian alliance would have two climbers so their score would be 51. One of our partner teams got stuck in their climb. Our driver drove over to their robot and spent almost a minute trying to lift them onto the pyramid. They were successful but in the process we sustained damage to our robot. As we attempted to climb ourselves we were successful except for the fact that our bumper broke off and hung down from our robot and barely touched the ground as the horn sounded and took away our 10 points. We would lose the match 51 to 43 but everyone had seen that we were not afraid of Hawaii (literally everyone was) and that we were willing to help our teammates out.

We would end the day as the number 12 ranked team heading into the playoffs. The top 8 teams in the competition had the right to choose who they wanted to be a part of their three team alliance for the playoffs.  We were the first non-top 8 team picked to be on an alliance and we joined the 8th seeded team on their alliance. To put this in perspective our mentor team 829 and literally everyone there congratulated us, as no rookie team had ever been picked. Team 829 who has a $35,000.00 robotics budget said it took them 5 years to get picked for the playoffs.  We were so excited because honestly in the playoffs if you are outside of the top 8 you may not get picked to play in the playoffs as so many other teams found out.

In the playoffs we were seeded against the Hawaiian Alliance (which featured Hawaii the number 1 seed, Carmel the number 2 seed, and team 1747 who had the most physically powerful robot in the competition). Honestly they had the perfect alliance – two great scoring robots and an incredible defender. Our alliance had one good scoring team and two defensive robots. We came out in the playoffs and gave them everything we had only to fall in the quarterfinals. Our competition was over and we finally had a chance to sit back and think about what he had done.

Spotlight: Tindley Prep Student Leadership

Thank you to Willie Bates II for the video.

At Tindley Prep, we want our scholars to be more than prepared, we want them to lead. We want them to lead the charge of change and positivist in their communities and throughout the world.

Below is a summary of what the leadership program at Tindley Prep is about.

The leadership program at the Tindley Preparatory Academy was created to help young men grow the capacity to lead their peers through service, academics & honor, gentlemanly endeavors, and seeking leadership to uphold excellence. In this program, scholars at TPA will be exposed to lessons throughout the year that help them achieve leadership goals specific to their grade level. Young men will also be required to take boards once a year to test their leadership capabilities. All school level leaders will need to have attained rank in their grade to serve. For example, a student may not run for student body president or be an ambassador for the school unless they have achieved rank in their grade level.

Making the Chain Strong: Tiler Mitchell

Indiana Code 20-8.1-3-18 states that, "Service as a page...constitutes a lawful excuse for a pupil to be absent from school." One of the Sons of Excellence, Tiler Mitchell, recently missed classes for that very reason. Tiler had the privileged of of serving State Senator Christina Hale.

Tiler said that he had a great time experiencing the House said he "appreciated that Ms. Hale's intern showed me the ropes while I was there."

Tindley Prep is proud of Mr. Mitchell and his accomplishments. Continue to make the chain strong sir!

Accelerated Sings with the Heart

Members of the Victory Association at Tindley Accelerated shake hands with Gov. Pence

Yesterday, our Tindley scholars in the Victory Association gospel choir  had an amazing opportunity to sing at Governor Mike Pence’s Black History Month Celebration. They performed in the rotunda of the State House and added music to the powerful presentations that were given.

I am extremely proud of not only their musical performance, but also their professionalism and behavior. They represented Tindley in such an amazing way. The link below is to a video with highlights of the event. Check out the video with pictures and clips of our amazing scholars!

Thanks for your support of the arts at Tindley!

Making the Chain Strong: Principal's List

The fine young men you see below in this post have done something special. They have done something extraordinary. These young men did something their own principal wasn't able to do until graduate school. They have stood on the shoulders of giants and were able to see far enough to look over obstacles that hindered some youth along the way. These young men earned their way onto the prestigious Principal's List. The Principal's List tag means these young men earned an A in every single class they had. They earned the highest grade in the most rigorous classes. These young men are telling us right now that they are ready for the rigors of college.

I salute these exceptional young people.
