Sons of Light Leadership - Fall 2014

The Sons of Light Leadership (Formerly Tindley Prep Leaders) have been selected, initiated, and trained. We look forward to what their leadership will bring to our school. The program started in 2012 with leaders who were willing to go against the grain and lead their peers. We believe that peer-to-peer leadership is the most difficult and most valuable type of leadership there is. Our young men learn to address their peers in a respectful yet powerful manner. This allows them to uphold the values, culture, and community of the Tindley Preparatory Academy.

The leaders inducted were:
Doctor Edwin Girton
Doctor Ariel Scott
Doctor Devin Archie
Doctor Reilly Conwell
Chief Armund Churchwell
Chief Josiah Poole
Chief Chad Lightbourne
Doctor Jamari Pollard
Doctor Paul Ford
Chief Gabriel Jones

The rank of Doctor identifies a 7th grade leader.
The rank of Chief identifies an 8th grade leader.

Tindley Prep Band at the Rhythm Discovery Center

On Thursday, April 17, 2014, the Tindley Prep Band took a field trip to the Rhythm Discovery Center, a percussion museum located in downtown Indianapolis. Here scholars had the opportunity to learn from professional musicians about the origins of percussion instruments. The tour guides gave some demonstrations of different percussion techniques as far as striking, scraping, and shaking on different instruments made out of metal, skin, and wood. The scholars were also asked scientific questions about sound waves and frequencies and were able to see the connections they have with music. Traveling through the museum, we were also shown the progression of the drum set instruments, from the older bebop set-up all the way to the more modern and electronic instruments. After the tour, the professionals lead the whole group in a drum circle, letting scholars lead the group while learning the three ways to hit the African style drums. After the amazing tour, the scholars had an awesome time exploring all the instruments on the tour, while even seeing a few hidden gems. All in all, it was a great day of musical learning!

Colin Powell: Prep Scholars going to the Steward Speaker Series

Recently, four of our Prep scholars went to see General Colin Powell speak at IUPUI. One of our 8th grade scholars wanted to write something about the General so the other scholars could know more. Read his description of General Powell below.

General Colin Powell was born in Harlem and was raised in the Bronx. He wanted to go to the Bronx High School for Science, but went to a different school instead. He graduated with a 2.0 GPA (as stated by Colin Powell, 2014).

Powell served in the U.S. Army for 35 years ultimately earning the rank of 4 star general (IUPUI Steward Speaker Series, 18). From 1987-1989, Powell served as Ronald Reagan'd Nation Security Adviser. He later served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He was the youngest and first ROTC graduate to ever serve in the position.

General Powell is 77 years old and has been married for 52 years.

Kollin Miller, Yale House Scholar, Tindley Preparatory Academy

Thank you to Andrew L. Crowe senior for taking our young men to have this experience and thanks to Matthew Steward for providing Indianapolis with the opportunity to see such great people.
