Inside Class: Trip to Emmis Communications

The Tindley Prep 8th graders recently took a field trip to Emmis Communication downtown on the circle. They were extremely interested to be in a professional environment and learning how people use the skills they use everyday in class. JD from Hank FM was happy to show the young men how communication plays a huge role in his job as a DJ. Christa did a terrific job explaining the difference between AM and FM radio signals to our young men and providing us with a first class tour of the facilities.

Christa also suggested we look up the graphical representation of the waves of AM and FM signals to see the difference. See the difference below and get an understanding for yourself. Thanks JD and Christa!

Inside Class: The Binder Check Challenge

The Tindley School Network is very intentional about what we do to help scholars achieve. We know that young people, especially young men, may struggle with school achievement because they struggle with organization. We make it a point to check this area of academic life regularly. We want our scholars to have neat binders so they can find the necessary materials needed to succeed in class. Check out the pictures below of a binder check in Mr. Schaefer's Problem Solving class.
I see you with the clean binder Kendall.

This young man is ready for success.

The tabs are always a good sign of an organized scholar.

Coaches for College: The First Meet

Jonathan Turner was excited to meet his new mentor.

The young men of Tindley Prep were excited to meet their mentors this Tuesday. Young men were literally beaming with joy to find someone to talk to about manhood, sportsmanship and success. Mentoring plays a special role at Tindley Prep. Middle School is such an important time in a young man's life. Middle School hosts the years in which a young man has to make a decision about who he wants to be. The staff at Tindley Prep want that decision to be a positive and productive life experience for our young men. One way to get our young men to follow this path is through mentorship.  If you are interested in becoming a mentor,
please call Mr. Durham (Mentor Coordinator) at 317-777-6290.

Making the Chain Strong: Elite Readers Association

Here are pictures from the winter dinner of the Elite Readers Association.
The Readers read A Hope in the Unseen by Ron Suskind

Feel free to read a copy to discuss the great life lessons of Cedric Jennings as told by Suskind.

Inside Class: Students Dissecting Pigs

Students in the 7th grade are currently learning about the endocrine system in organisms. To enhance, connect, and free the curriculum Ms. Sayles (Science 7) brought in baby pigs for the boys to dissect. They used tools to make incisions in the fetal swine to locate and identify parts of the endocrine system.

Inside Class: Jackie and Me at the IRT

Prep Scholars recently went to the Indiana Repository Theater to see a play about the life and sacrifices of Jackie Robinson. The scholars were engaged and really eager to join the conversation about the heroic contributions of Mr. Robinson.

Mr. Micah Poole (Grade 7) wrote that the scene of the play that resonated with him most was "a scene of Jackie overcoming...adversity...when the Dodgers played the Phillies. In this scene, pitchers were throwing baseballs at Jackie's head. In that game Jackie stole three straight bases...including home."

Spotlight: Sons of Tindley visit the Sons of Excellence

Tindley Alumni recently visited Tindley Prep to share their experiences at Tindley and in college. The graduates went through one of the most rigorous high school programs in the city, in Tindley, to achieve the success and opportunities they have now.

They shared stories of how Tindley has prepared them for college, life, and success. It was wonderful to hear them speak so fondly of their alma mater. Prep scholars loved the interaction and wanted to hear more.
