Several Prep scholars recently had an opportunity to attend an Indy Eleven game at Carroll Stadium. They had a great time and met players who shared their journey to professional soccer. Thanks to the Indy Eleven organization for a great time!

Tindley Prep Band at the Rhythm Discovery Center
On Thursday, April 17, 2014, the Tindley Prep Band took a
field trip to the Rhythm Discovery Center, a percussion museum located in
downtown Indianapolis. Here scholars had the opportunity to learn from
professional musicians about the origins of percussion instruments. The tour
guides gave some demonstrations of different percussion techniques as far as
striking, scraping, and shaking on different instruments made out of metal,
skin, and wood. The scholars were also asked scientific questions about sound waves
and frequencies and were able to see the connections they have with music.
Traveling through the museum, we were also shown the progression of the drum
set instruments, from the older bebop set-up all the way to the more modern and
electronic instruments. After the tour, the professionals lead the whole group
in a drum circle, letting scholars lead the group while learning the three ways
to hit the African style drums. After the amazing tour, the scholars had an
awesome time exploring all the instruments on the tour, while even seeing a few
hidden gems. All in all, it was a great day of musical learning!
Colin Powell: Prep Scholars going to the Steward Speaker Series

Recently, four of our Prep scholars went to see General Colin Powell speak at IUPUI. One of our 8th grade scholars wanted to write something about the General so the other scholars could know more. Read his description of General Powell below.
General Colin Powell was born in Harlem and was raised in the Bronx. He wanted to go to the Bronx High School for Science, but went to a different school instead. He graduated with a 2.0 GPA (as stated by Colin Powell, 2014).
Powell served in the U.S. Army for 35 years ultimately earning the rank of 4 star general (IUPUI Steward Speaker Series, 18). From 1987-1989, Powell served as Ronald Reagan'd Nation Security Adviser. He later served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton. He was the youngest and first ROTC graduate to ever serve in the position.
General Powell is 77 years old and has been married for 52 years.

Spotlight: Prep's PTO
The Tindley Prep PTO is nothing short of amazing. It, like the school it supports, is a second year organization. However, age does not completely explain what this group is doing in our school.
A short rundown of their great accomplishments include: Tindley Block Party and end of year bash, dinner at Parent University, hallway patrols at the end of the day, working our concession stand for basketball games, donating an air hockey table, donating a table tennis set, creating certificates and programs for assemblies, and spearheading the yearbook project.
They are the most dynamic parent group with which I have ever worked and I look forward to all of the things they will continue to do.

Spotlight: Prep Basketball Champs
Prep's 8th grade A team just became the best in Indianapolis. They beat John Marshall 82-43. Congratulations to these young men for becoming 8th grade city champs and meeting high academic expectations to even step on the court.

Prep Scholar Receives Award
Tindley Prep scholar Julian Smith received the Brother's Keeper award at the 2013 Strengthening Family Conference. Julian is an honor roll student at The Prep and is a wonderful poet and writer. Julian is also very involved in his church community, martial arts, and selflessly helps to take care of his brother with disabilities.
I salute Julian and his family. Congratulations!
